| Dear TOPS Families, Happy Independence Day to all! For all of us engaged in home education, Independence Day is a special occasion, full of opportunity for celebrations and for learning. We are blessed because we live in a country that still makes room for our God-given right to rear and educate our children in the way we see fit. While some states regulate your home education program more than others, it is still your right in all 50 states to direct your child’s education, in your home, in your way, in your beliefs. I found this quote recently and thought it so appropriate to this letter: Those in society who are in charge of schools must never forget that the parents have been appointed by God himself as the first and principal educators of their children and that their right is completely inalienable. – Pope John Paul IIDuring this month of July, even if you are taking a summer break from studies, please take the opportunity to speak to your children of the concepts of freedom and liberty, the founding of the United States of America, the men and women who struggled so hard to purchase our freedom and the price paid by so many Americans through the years to maintain it. While the lessons and conversations will be geared to the age of each child, let’s make sure that all our young Americans grow up knowing the reasons for the day-off-work, for the hot dogs, picnics, parades, and fireworks. We do hope all of you enjoy the holiday and your special set of traditions. ¡Feliz Día de la Independencia para todos!(Para nuestros estudiantes internacionales, alentamos a las familias a hacer de esta semana un momento de prendizaje sobre la historia de su propio país, personas importantes y libertades.) This course will replace any elective the student might have taken. Here is a description of the course: Personal Financial Literacy is a semester-length elective designed to help high school students prepare for success in making financial decisions throughout their lives.
