FEBRUARY
This is the time of the year when some of our families are enjoying mild, sunny weather in the South and others are snowbound in the more northern states. We send our prayers and well wishes to all, no matter what’s happening outside the window of your “home-campus” of The Oaks Private School.
You might want to follow a hint from a parent/teacher who believes in planning ahead for adventures. She has found that Spring can be one of the hardest seasons to educate in the home because the weather is so nice, school has been going on so long – and the end is in sight. She prepares a special bag to be snatched up at a moment’s notice to have school outside – in the backyard, at a park, at the lake or beach. In the bag would be a book of poetry or read-aloud stories, watercolor paints and supplies, sidewalk chalk, games, flower/tree/bird identifier books, etc. Then, when it becomes obvious that school is going to be a struggle on a particular day (for herself or the kids), she just grabs the bag and away they go. They spend most of the day outside, which would make anyone happy, and the day is so full of educational activities that it can count as a school day. By planning ahead, the temptation to “skip school” becomes an opportunity for broadening your family’s educational adventures

Esta es la época del año cuando algunas de nuestras familias disfrutan de un clima templado y soleado en el sur y otras están nevadas en los estados más al norte. Enviamos nuestras oraciones y buenos deseos a todos, sin importar lo que esté sucediendo fuera de la ventana de su “campus” de la escuela privada The Oaks.
Es posible que desee seguir una pista de un padre / maestro que cree en la planificación anticipada de aventuras. MID-YEAR THOUGHTS
All TOPS students work on their own daily calendar because we accept student at any time during the year. However, most of our students enroll in the traditional start months of August and September. That makes January and February the mid-point of the school year for most students. With that in mind, we found a thought from a homeschooling mom about “motivating” her kids:
PENSAMIENTOS DE MEDIO AÑO
Todos los estudiantes de TOPS trabajan en su propio calendario diario porque aceptamos estudiantes en cualquier momento durante el año. Sin embargo, la mayoría de nuestros estudiantes se matriculan en los meses de inicio tradicionales de agosto y septiembre. How do you motivate children?
First, I have never tried to motivate my children. They know what is expected of them in school, and they do it. We have wonderful times together in school, but I have never taken the approach that they should perform well in school because they love learning. I have found that the love of learning is automatic when school is handled properly, but I also believe that no child should be made to feel that he must particularly enjoy something in order to do it well.
I have always told my children that life is filled with things that we do not want to do but must do anyway. At times we may have jobs we do not like. It is likely that God will require us to do some things that we would rather not. We are going to have to do lots of things that are difficult, or boring, or exasperating, but we never have any excuse for not doing our work to the best of our abilities. (excerpted)
¿Cómo motivan a los niños?
Primero, nunca he tratado de motivar a mis hijos. Saben lo que se espera de ellos en la escuela, y lo hacen. Pasamos momentos maravillosos juntos en la escuela, pero nunca he adoptado el enfoque de que deberían tener un buen desempeño en la escuela porque les encanta aprender. He descubierto que el amor por el aprendizaje es automático cuando la escuela se maneja adecuadamente, pero también creo que ningún niño debe sentir que debe disfrutar particularmente algo para hacerlo bien.
Siempre les dije a mis hijos que la vida está llena de cosas que no queremos hacer pero que debemos hacer de todos modos. A veces podemos tener trabajos que no nos gustan. Es probable que Dios nos exija que hagamos algunas cosas que preferiríamos no hacer. Tendremos que hacer muchas cosas que son difíciles, aburridas o exasperantes, pero nunca tenemos ninguna excusa para no hacer nuestro trabajo lo mejor que podamos. (extracto)
