| FEBRUARY BLESSINGS TO ALL TOPS FAMILIES Here we are – in the second month of a new year! We do hope your new year is going well and that you are enjoying the winter months and staying warm. This is the time of the year when some of our families are enjoying mild, sunny weather in the South and others are snowbound in the more northern states. We send our prayers and well wishes to all, no matter what’s happening outside the window of your “satellite campus” of The Oaks Private School. You might want to follow a hint from a parent/teacher who believes in planning ahead for adventures. She has found that Spring can be one of the hardest seasons to educate in the home because the weather is so nice, school has been going on so long – and the end is in sight. She prepares a special bag to be snatched up at a moment’s notice to have school outside – in the backyard, at a park, at the lake or beach. In the bag would be a book of poetry or read-aloud stories, watercolor paints and supplies, sidewalk chalk, games, flower/tree/bird identifier books, etc. Then, when it becomes obvious that school is going to be a struggle on a particular day (for herself or the kids), she just grabs the bag and away they go. They spend most of the day outside, which would make anyone happy, and the day is so full of educational activities that it can count as a school day. By planning ahead, the temptation to “skip school” becomes an opportunity for broadening your family’s educational adventures. | IT’S STILL HOMESCHOOLING! Most of our students are now studying through one of the online programs – Apex, Odysseyware, Accelerate, or Ignitia, and many have tutors for their courses. We want to re-emphasize to all parents that even though you may have chosen tutors for your students … it’s still homeschooling. You are expected to supervise your child in schooling by making sure he/she is at the computer every day, actually doing the lessons and not just surfing the internet or playing games. You should check percentages complete every week, check the scores every week, read answers to questions, and communicate with the tutor when there is a problem or you have a question. If you are not getting communications from your child’s tutor, please let me know. You should get an email at least once a month with a progress report. If your child is not keeping up with lessons, you should hear from the tutor more often.
